Across our three libraries our silent study rooms are popular places to study, and they prove even more popular as the exams approach. See below for help in locating these silent study spaces at this important time, and remember that you can speak with library staff if you are being disturbed by others while you study.
The Sir Duncan Rice Library
There are a range of study spaces across this library, including silent ones. Many of our silent study spaces have recently had power sockets and USB charging points installed, meaning that you can now study in silence and still use your laptops and other electronic devices. We still ask that you do not eat in any of the silent rooms as that can be a great distraction to others. For full details of our silent study spaces see below:
Floor 1 – south west corner (overlooking Bedford Road). Room 124. No power sockets. Forty two study spaces.
Floor 3, 4 and 5 – south east corner (overlooking Meston Building). Rooms 312, 412 and 512. Power sockets on each study desk. Twenty study spaces per room.
Floor 3, 4 and 5 – south west corner (overlooking Bedford Road). Rooms 324, 424 and 524. Power sockets and USB charging points assigned to each study desk. Twenty study spaces per room.
Floor 6 – south west corner (overlooking Bedford Road). Room 624. No power sockets. Twenty study spaces. This space is designated a “no devices” location throughout the year to support those who wish to study in this way.
The whole top floor of the Medical Library is designated as silent study space. You are permitted to use laptops and other electronic devices in that area.
You will find the silent study areas within the Taylor Library in the D Block sections. There are silent areas on both floors of D Block, with different rules around laptop use in different areas. Each desk is clearly marked, to let you know whether or not you can use latops or other electronic devices.
At the Library we believe you should be spending the majority of your time reading materials and not looking for them, so we have a range of workshops to help you learn how to get your hands on the best books, articles, reports and other information in the shortest time possible.
These are our Find it Fast! workshops, and they will be running between February 20 and March 8 to help all undergraduate and taught postgraduate students navigate the library landscape, which can at times seem filled with so much choice.
They are held over lunch time in The Sir Duncan Rice Library and are a great introduction to the services and resources we provide and the best ways in which you can make use of them. They cover:
Using Google cleverly to get you to the information you need more quickly.
Using the many online databases which we subscribe to. They contain important resources which you just cannot find by searching in Google!
How to search for the hundreds of thousands of electronic books which we have access to.
Invest one hour of your time over lunch to learn tips and techniques that will repay you with time saved when searching for the materials you need for assignments and exams!

WHEN: Monday 15 – Friday 19 January, 10.00 and 14.00
WHERE: Welcome Desk on ground floor of The Sir Duncan Rice Library
WHAT: Short tour of the library lasting around 30 minutes, introducing you to the building, services and facilities, to help you make the most of the resources available to you from the library.
No booking necessary – just come along on the day and time that suits you best.
Following on from our already fully-booked Library Tours, which will take place on September 4 and 5, we will be running open tours of The Sir Duncan Rice Library over the rest of that week and the following two weeks for all students, new and old. This is to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to learn about the Library.
Starting on Wednesday September 6 and running until Friday September 22, come and meet staff on the ground floor of the library at 10am or 2pm. There is no need to book a place and each tour group will contain a maximum of ten people.
There will be more than one tour taking place at a time, lasting approximately 30 minutes. The tours by our friendly staff will introduce you to not only the beautiful building, but also the services available from the library. We will also tell you:
How materials are organised in the building
How to begin borrowing the library books on your reading lists
How library staff can help you during your time at The University of Aberdeen
Please note that there will be no tours taking place at the weekends, but staff working then will still be happy to answer any questions you may have about the Library Service.

The Library is here to help all postgraduate researchers as they begin, or continue, their in-depth research with a series of Information Skills Workshops designed to their needs. With so much academic literature available through the University of Aberdeen these workshops will give you the confidence and skills to locate and manage the materials you need.
These workshops will take place in November 2016 and will help you understand the resources available to you as researchers here at the University of Aberdeen, and how to get the best out of them. *IMPORTANT NOTE: The workshop focusing on the management of references (Part 3) is not suitable for research postgraduates in the School of Law, as the software used does not support the OSCOLA referencing style required for legal theses.

It’s that time again when The Sir Duncan Rice Library is really busy. We know that everyone has their own favourite way to study, and for many of you this means using a laptop or tablet.
During this busy exam period, starting from revision week Monday 25th April electronic devices may be used in all except one of the Strictly Silent areas. If you prefer a “no electronic device” area then head for Room 624 on Floor 6 (south west corner of the building).
Some of you may remember our pilot run of using the silent study rooms for extra study space with electronic devices in December last year. It was very successful with a high amount of students using the rooms. We would like to offer this again for the busy exam period.

In the lead up to the fast approaching exam period The Sir Duncan Rice Library will be extending its opening hours to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are just under two weeks until this happens but we want to let you know just now so that you can properly plan your revision.
The Sir Duncan Rice Library will open at 11.00 on Sunday April 24, and stay open continuously until 22.00 on Friday May 20, 2016.
Over this period it is important that you are aware of the following:
Swipe access only after 22.00 – please ensure you have your ID card, as access will not be permitted without it.
The PCs require a nightly shutdown (lasting about ten minutes) and reboot for essential maintenance. This will happen at 04.00, and you will be given an option to delay this for 2 hours.
Essential cleaning of the building will be carried out overnight between 02.00 and 06.00, which may result in some disruption.
Look after yourselves and your belongings – take breaks, but do not leave your personal belongings unattended.
