It is not currently possible to access Scopus or ScienceDirect from off-campus in the usual way, using Shibboleth login. It is still possible, though, to access these two online resources via our VDI. You can find information on using the VDI in the Learners’ Toolkit.
Unfortunately, personalisation features in these databases are also not working correctly, whether you are on-campus or off-campus.
This intermittent access issue is also being experienced by other Universities. Scopus and ScienceDirect are currently investigating this and hope to resolve the problem soon. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while this is being rectified.
We have received notification that Emerald Insight, one of our providers of numerous e-journals will be undergoing essential maintenance tomorrow, Tuesday March 22. This work will impact upon some of the functionality on their site, but you should still be able to gain access in “read only” mode.
This maintenance is due to begin at 08.00 GMT, March 22, and is expected to last for up to 12 hours. The following features will not be fully functional during this time:
Adding Publications as favourites
Any changes to ‘My Account’ and ‘Institutional Account’
Should you access the website during this time, you will receive a notification that the site functionality is temporary unavailable within your browser.
The majority of the titles available through Emerald Insight are within the following disciplines:
Fortunately, many, but not all, of the titles on Emerald Insight are also available through the ProQuest platform, on such databases as ABI/INFORM Complete, Accounting and Tax, and others. So, when linking out to a journal article from Primo tomorrow check to see if it is being provided by Emerald Insight, and if it is also provided by another supplier please select that alternative.
Emerald, and ourselves, apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but the maintenance is vital.
Tomorrow library staff will be carrying out vital maintenance to Primo, the Library’s resource discovery tool, as essential updates are installed.
This will take place between 9am and 11am on Wednesday January 13.
It is expected that Primo will still be functioning as normal but it should be considered at risk of being unavailable during this time. This maintenance work will be likely to also impact upon the availability of the Library Catalogue and DigiTool.
We apologise for any disturbance this short interruption may cause, but this maintenance is essential and it is hoped that by carrying it out before the start of the second semester as few people as possible will be inconvenienced.
Digitool, the University’s system for storing and presenting a range of digital materials, may be undergoing essential maintenance on the morning of Monday 21 December and will therefore not be available for use.
This will take place between 9am and 10.30am, meaning that during that time it will not be possible to access Digitool and view past exam papers or any of the other resources hosted on it.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but we hope that by carrying out the maintenance a few days before the Christmas holidays that as few people as possible will be impacted.
Tomorrow library staff will be carrying out vital maintenance to Primo, the Library’s resource discovery tool, as essential updates are installed. This maintenance work may also impact upon the Library Catalogue and DigiTool.

We apologise for any inconvenience this short interruption may cause, but this maintenance is essential.
And, as this is the week during which exams start, we would also like to wish all our students good luck.
We are happy to announce that all Library Systems are now back up and functioning correctly after the great work carried out by the University’s IT Service over the last day, since the major power outage across the Old Aberdeen campus yesterday.
You will now be able to search across our many different collections and resources as normal, and also use our self-issue and return machines with no problems.
We thank you again for your patience and understanding while this important work was carried out and also apologise again for any inconvenience caused by this interruption to our services.
